Hurricane Lorena gains strength off Mexico's western shores, while Kiko becomes a Category 4 storm
The Miami-based National Hurricane Center has reported that as of the latest update, two tropical systems - Lorena and Kiko - are currently making their way towards different regions.
Lorena, a Category 1 hurricane, is expected to move over land on Friday. As of now, it is centered about 160 miles (225 kilometers) west of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, and is traveling northwest at 15 mph (24 kph). The storm is expected to weaken on Thursday and be a tropical storm on Friday as it nears land.
Rainfall totals could reach 15 inches (38 centimeters) in some places due to Lorena, and flash flooding and mudslides are possible. Additionally, ocean swells generated by Lorena could cause life-threatening rip currents in coastal areas.
Meanwhile, Hurricane Kiko has intensified into a major hurricane in the Pacific Ocean on Wednesday. Kiko surged to Category 4 on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale with maximum sustained winds of 130 mph (215 kph). The wind scale ranges from 1 to 5, with hurricane categories 3 and above considered major hurricanes.
However, as of the report, there were no watches or warnings associated with Kiko. Forecasters predict that Kiko could get even stronger in the next day or so, but its intensity is likely to fluctuate after that.
As of now, Kiko is centered about 1,600 miles (2,580 kilometers) east of Hilo, Hawaii, and is traveling west at 9 mph (15 kph). Tropical storm warnings and watches are in effect for much of Baja California and parts of northwestern Mexico.
It's important to note that no hazards affecting land were reported in connection with either Lorena or Kiko at the time of this report. However, residents in the affected areas are advised to stay updated and follow the instructions of local authorities.
