Hyundai's Interested Model Outshines Renault 5's Performance?
The Hyundai Inster, a compact electric hatchback, has made a significant impact in the European market, selling 14,281 units during the first half of 2025. This new addition to Hyundai's lineup showcases a unique blend of style, performance, and practicality.
Produced in the city of Nosovice in the Czech Republic by Hyundai's subsidiary, Gwangju Global Motors (GGM), the Inster boasts a comfortable driving experience, thanks to its light steering and well-tuned suspension. The tested 02 model is equipped with a motor producing 85.5 kW (115 PS) and 147 Nm (108 lb-ft) of torque.
The Inster offers a claimed maximum range of 229 miles, providing ample distance for daily commutes and weekend trips. The range consists of three variants: the 01, priced from GBP23,505, the 02 starting at GBP26,755, and the Cross, available from GBP28,755. The Inster 01 features a 42 kWh battery, while the 02 and Cross models come equipped with a larger 49 kWh battery.
The Inster's unique proportions, resembling Japan's Kei class, offer minimal overhangs and a narrow, tall stance, making it perfect for navigating cities and narrow lanes, with a width of 1,610 mm. The vehicle's lighting shapes at both ends are cute and almost retro, adding to its charm.
The Inster's performance is adequate, even for motorway driving, and the boot is handily shaped and deep, with cables stored below a false floor. The sliding back seats provide more leg room, even with only two seats in the back, offering a spacious interior.
The Inster's platform, HMG's K1, has been used by various Group models, not all of them electric-native. This versatile platform allows for a wide range of vehicle configurations, catering to different market needs.
Electric propulsion systems for small cars are becoming the norm in most European countries, and the Inster fits right into this trend. Its charging speed of up to 85 kW translates to seven and a half hours via a 7.4 kW home wall box, providing a convenient charging solution for consumers.
Hyundai's success with the Inster is reflected in the company's overall performance in the European market. Hyundai was a top ten brand in Europe during H1 2025, with total passenger vehicle deliveries of 316,492, ahead of Kia.
In early 2026, the first Hyundai i10 and Fiat 500 Ibrida will be exceptions to the trend of electric vehicles in the A segment. However, the Inster continues to shine as a promising electric vehicle option in this competitive market.
