In the heart of summer, keeping cool is essential. One might think that switching up the traditional ice cubes with Jell-O ice cubes could add a fun twist to refreshments. However, a recent experiment revealed some surprising findings.

The experiment involved three different ice cube trays: a traditional ice cube tray, an all-silicone one, and a tray with silicone on the bottom and plastic on top. Jell-O was poured into each of these trays and allowed to freeze.

When it came time to remove the frozen treats, the silicone ice tray proved to be the easiest. The frozen cubes slipped out effortlessly, thanks to the flexibility of the silicone material. On the other hand, the traditional ice cube tray required a bit more effort, with a butter knife used to go around the edges to help release the cubes. Unfortunately, the tray with both silicone and plastic was unsuccessful, as the cubes wouldn't come out.

As for the Jell-O ice cubes themselves, they didn't quite live up to expectations. Despite their festive appearance, particularly the Red, White & Blue Jell-O ice cubes published on Pinterest by the Test Kitchen, the Jell-O chunks in the cups were not particularly appealing.

Taste-testing was conducted with lemon lime soda, but the water in the Jell-O ice cubes melted first, leaving behind chunks that got stuck in straws. Moreover, on a hot day, the Jell-O ice cubes would disintegrate faster, making them less effective at keeping drinks cool.

In an attempt to change the colours of the Jell-O ice cubes, different types of Jell-O were used. However, this was possible, but the results were not entirely satisfying. When left for about 10 minutes, the Jell-O ice cubes started to break down, leaving behind chunks in the cup.

Given these findings, it seems that regular ice cubes will be the preferred choice this summer. They may not be as visually striking, but they certainly get the job done when it comes to keeping drinks cool and refreshing.
