Iconic character Bagpuss set for revival in live-action movie, after 50 years since initial series debut on screens

Fifty years after its debut, the classic children's show Bagpuss is set to make a comeback, stirring from its slumber to find itself in contemporary Britain. This exciting news was announced by Birmingham-based production company Threewise Entertainment and Monello Productions, who are collaborating on a live-action/animation hybrid project.

Originally created by the talented team of puppeteer Firmin and co-creator Oliver Postgate, Bagpuss first graced our screens in 1974. The creators, who were also responsible for other beloved children's shows such as the Clangers, Basil Brush, and Ivor the Engine, brought to life a cast of charming characters that captured the hearts of generations.

Sadly, Firmin passed away in 2018 at the age of 89, but his legacy lives on through the timeless stories and characters he helped create. His barn on his farm in Canterbury, Kent, served as the production base for many of these shows, fostering a unique and creative environment.

Bagpuss, a cosy old cloth cat, and his friends—Emma, Madeleine, and Professor Yaffle—will embark on a modern-day quest in the new film. They will continue their timeless mission of mending lost and broken 'things', bringing joy and comfort to those they encounter.

The film is described as a heart-felt adventure that combines comedy, music, and storytelling, all while staying true to the spirit of the original series. It is being produced by Monello Productions, who have a reputation for creating high-quality family entertainment.

According to Oliver Postgate's son, Daniel, the show was axed by BBC bosses who felt it was out of date. However, Daniel claimed that the creators were 'quite keen to carry on'. Despite the opposition from executives who were moving into a new direction of 'zoomy sugary [children's] programmes', the creators' vision for Bagpuss was too strong to be silenced.

Bagpuss has remained a firm favourite with the British public, as evidenced by its victory in a 1999 BBC poll as the nation's favourite children's show. Last year, Bagpuss celebrated its 50th birthday, marking half a century of bringing comfort and laughter to children and adults alike.

As we eagerly await the release of the new Bagpuss film, we can't help but feel a sense of nostalgia for the simpler times the show represented. With its timeless charm and heart-warming stories, Bagpuss continues to be a beacon of comfort and joy for many.
