If the reported alteration of Snapdragon 8 Elite's name proves accurate, perplexity is on the horizon

Rumours about Qualcomm's next flagship chip, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, have been circulating for some time. According to reports from Chinese Weibo tipster Digital Chat Station (DCS) and WccfTech, the chip is expected to make its debut towards the end of September.

The name change from "Snapdragon 8 Elite 2" to "Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5" has left some users puzzled, as it seems like an unusual shift. This change is reportedly due to Qualcomm's other chip in development, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5. Some speculate that the change could be a move to bring more "series cohesion" in Qualcomm's chip development.

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip is rumoured to have enhanced Pegasus cores, clocking out at 5GHz. If true, this could lead to a strong power boost. The chip is also said to have achieved impressive performance scores in early tests. According to the rumours, the Elite 2 (or Elite Gen 5) scored a single-core score of 4,000 points and a multi-core score of around 11,000. If confirmed, these numbers would clear the original Elite.

The subsequent rumours about the Elite 2's power and performance originated after it allegedly went through an early performance test. However, the source of these initial rumours is not specified.

It is also rumoured that companies would begin releasing their 2025 flagships with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip in early/mid-October. This would suggest an earlier release than expected for Qualcomm's next flagship chip.

The Qualcomm developer team responsible for the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 is called "Qualcomm Snapdragon Elite Gaming Team." This team is known for its focus on gaming performance and optimisation, which could bode well for the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5's potential in the gaming sector.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 chip, on the other hand, is expected to have performance under the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. This could make the Elite Gen 5 a more attractive option for manufacturers looking to produce high-performance devices.

As always, it is important to take these rumours with a pinch of salt until Qualcomm officially confirms the details. Nonetheless, the anticipation for the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 continues to grow as we approach its rumoured debut in late September.
