Marl's City Centre Transformation: A Climate-Resilient and Culturally Rich Revitalization

The city of Marl is set to undergo a significant transformation, with plans to revitalize its historical Volkspark and various other green spaces. This project, known as the "Ruhrmodernity - Our City Administration," has been awarded the third star by the International Garden Exhibition (IGA) 2027, signifying its unique selling proposition and cross-cutting concept.

The goal of this revitalization is to further develop the Volkspark, a historical park from the 1920s, adapting it to the changing climate, and creating new leisure, sports, and social encounter options. The city centre will receive an investment of around 10 million euros, with a specific focus on the Volkspark in Alt-Marl and the Friedenspark in Marl-Mitte.

The Volkspark revitalization and renovation will be funded through the federal program "Adaptation of Urban Spaces to Climate Change." A total of 4.9 million euros will be allocated for the Volkspark project, including 4.4 million euros in federal funds and 500,000 euros from the city budget.

In addition to the Volkspark, the project includes the redesign of the Creiler Platz and the upgrading of the quarter around the Friedenspark. The plans aim to create climate-resilient open spaces that will not only beautify the city but also ensure its resilience in the face of climate change.

The IGA 2027 in the Ruhr Metropolitan Region focuses on themes such as climate adaptation, sustainable urban development, culture, leisure, and building culture. By successfully establishing Marl in the IGA qualification process, the "Ruhrmodernity - Our City Administration" project is making a significant contribution to the future-oriented design of urban spaces.

Horst Fischer and Nina Frense are likely researchers or contributors involved in the project "Ruhrmodernity - Unser Stadtamt: Bauen von Kultur und Ikonen der Ruhrmodernität in der grünen Stadt Marl," focusing on cultural and architectural aspects of Ruhrmodernity in Marl. This project is a sustainable redevelopment initiative for Marl's city centre, covering an area of approximately 9.3 hectares.

The third star is the highest level in the IGA qualification process and honors projects with a unique selling proposition and a cross-cutting concept. The "Ruhrmodernity - Our City Administration" project has successfully demonstrated these qualities, ensuring that Marl will receive special funding within the IGA 2027.

The project also focuses on ecological, social, and urban redevelopment, as well as strengthening urban green spaces. By revitalizing the Volkspark and other green spaces, Marl is not only preserving its rich history but also creating a more livable, sustainable, and resilient city for its residents and visitors.
