Iga Swiatek encounters defeat at the hands of Amanda Anisimova in the US Open quarterfinals, securing her spot in the semifinals

On a thrilling day at the Arthur Ashe Stadium, 20-year-old Amanda Anisimova outplayed second-seeded Iga Swiatek in the US Open quarterfinals, securing a 6-4, 6-3 victory.

The match was a stark contrast from their Wimbledon encounter, with Anisimova's performance reflecting her character and determination. The first set was completed in a swift 51 minutes, much faster than the Wimbledon final which Swiatek won in 57 minutes.

The early stages of the match saw Anisimova's aggressive play style pay off, as she broke Swiatek's serve early on, raising concerns of a one-sided match. Swiatek, however, managed to break Anisimova's serve at the start of the second set, momentarily shifting the momentum.

However, the net cord incident played a significant role in the match. The first occurrence was when Anisimova was up 4-3, and the second came on her third match point, both favouring the American. These fortunate bounces helped Anisimova win two crucial points and ultimately, the match.

Swiatek, who had a higher first serve percentage compared to Anisimova (52% vs 50%), was unable to capitalise on her advantage. Anisimova, on the other hand, was more successful in winning points with her first serve (68% vs 59%). Despite Swiatek's strong performance throughout the tournament, she struggled with her serve, winning only 33% of points behind her second serve.

Swiatek appeared to be out of solutions and showed frustration during the match, contrasting with Anisimova's composed demeanour. The match was more balanced and enjoyable compared to the first day match between Félix Auger-Aliassime and Alex de Minaur.

Anisimova's victory sets her up for a place in the US Open final. Her opponent will be either Karolina Muchova or Naomi Osaka, who face each other in the other semifinal. This will be a significant milestone for Anisimova, as she had never gone beyond the third round at Flushing Meadows prior to this tournament.

Anisimova's performance in this match was special and reflective of her character, leaving tennis fans eagerly anticipating her next challenge in the US Open final.
