Illicit migrants detained in Sarasota during a crackdown on underground gambling
In a joint operation, the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office (SCSO) and the Florida Gaming Control Commission (FGCC) have successfully shut down an illegal gambling operation at the Magic Arcade, located at 5624 Swift Road in Sarasota.
The operation, which resulted from a months-long investigation into potential illegal gambling activities in Sarasota County, led to the arrest of two individuals. The suspects, aged 28 and 30, were discovered to be residing in the United States illegally on revoked visas.
Sheriff Kurt A. Hoffman spoke about the operation, stating, "Our aim is to rid the community of these gambling businesses." He added that the operation was a testament to the successful efforts of the SCSO's Intelligence and Tactical Units, Special Investigations Section, Criminal Investigations Section, Patrol, and Crime Scene Unit.
The two men are facing charges related to keeping/maintaining a gambling house and possession of slot machines. During the operation, a total of 117 slot machines were seized, and an unspecified amount of cash was also confiscated.
The SCSO is collaborating with Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) for illegal immigration enforcement. However, as of the end of 2023, there are no publicly known specific organisations that the SCSO is working with in relation to the illegal immigration aspect of this operation.
The citizens' complaints have been heard, and the operations are successfully shutting down illegal gambling venues in the area. For more specific information about a particular organisation's involvement, it is recommended to consult official press releases from the SCSO or local-regional media.
