Illinois' Luke Altmyer spearheads dominant victory over Western Illinois, kickstarting the No. 12 team's campaign.
In a one-sided affair on Kickoff Day, No. 12 Illinois showcased their dominance against Western Illinois, securing a convincing 48-3 victory.
The Leathernecks started quarterback Chris Irvin, but it was the Illinois offense that shone brightest. Luke Altmyer, under centre for the Fighting Illini, threw for 217 yards and three touchdowns, leading the charge.
Aidan Laughery, a key player for Illinois, made a significant impact on the ground, rushing for 101 yards and two scores. His 25-yard touchdown run in the first quarter gave Illinois an early 14-0 lead, and his second score extended the advantage to 21-0.
Defensively, Illinois was equally impressive. Gabe Jacas, an NFL prospect, forced a fumble on a sack, which was recovered by Kaleb Patterson. This turnover set up a quick Illinois touchdown, increasing their lead to 28-0.
DJ Taylor, the Illinois defender, blocked a 28-yard field-goal attempt for Western Illinois, denying the Leathernecks any points in the first half. Western Illinois managed only 29 yards on the ground and struggled to find any offensive rhythm.
Justin Bowick, another Illinois receiver, caught two touchdown passes, while Hank Beatty made a memorable impact. He caught five passes for 108 yards and delivered the team's first punt return for a score since 2013, a 69-yard touchdown that put Illinois up 38-0 with eight minutes left in the third quarter.
Kaden Feagin and Laughery added fourth-quarter touchdowns for Illinois, as they scored on their first five possessions in the game. The final score of 48-3 was a reflection of Illinois' dominance throughout the match.
At halftime, Illinois had a 235-87 advantage in total yards, and they finished the game with a 440-163 edge. Demari Davis posted four receptions for 65 yards for Western Illinois, while Irvin completed 14 of 29 passes for 134 yards.
Despite the one-sided scoreline, Western Illinois will look to regroup and improve ahead of their next fixture, while Illinois will aim to carry this form into their upcoming games.
