Immigrant Expressing Concern: Personal Situation Leaves Them Vulnerable

In the town hall of Chico, California, a poignant question was posed by George Gold, a resident and son of Holocaust survivors, to Representative Doug LaMalfa. The event, held after an eight-year hiatus, marked a significant moment for the community.

George Gold, an occasional contributor to ChicoSol, compared the actions of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to the rounding up and detention of people without trials, a practice reminiscent of Nazi Germany. He asked LaMalfa, a Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives, about the parallels between ICE and the Gestapo, an elite army unit in Nazi Germany known for its violence and unchecked authority.

Born in Australia, where his parents had settled after their worldwide escape, Gold grew up in a community of Holocaust survivors. His father, an amateur boxer, managed to escape from Nazi camps multiple times. Gold's family, too, fled from Nazi relocation camps in Austria.

Over the last few months, images of ICE agents kidnapping people off the street and in businesses have been seen, with no trial, no recourse, and no appeals. Thousands of immigrants and citizens are being detained indefinitely and without legal representation.

LaMalfa responded to Gold's question with a single word, "No." However, Gold pressed further, questioning whether LaMalfa's name would be mentioned in the same sentence as Goebbels, Mengele, and Trump in future historical accounts.

The United States, as a democratic nation, prides itself on its justice system and due process. However, the actions of ICE have raised concerns among many, including Gold, who has firsthand knowledge of authoritarian fascist governments since he was 7 years old. He fears that the current situation in the United States is veering dangerously close to the fascist authoritarian government Gold's family fled from.

LaMalfa, who represents a large rural district in Northern California that includes Shasta County and Oroville, has served in Congress for about 12 years as of 2025. His response to Gold's question, while brief, has sparked a broader conversation about the role of ICE and the treatment of immigrants in the United States.
