Immigration enforcement resulted in the apprehension of 475 individuals during a raid in the state of Georgia, according to a Homeland Security official.

In a significant development, Homeland Security officials conducted a raid at the Hyundai plant in Georgia, the largest single site enforcement operation in the history of Homeland Security Investigations. The operation resulted in the detainment of 475 people, with more than 40 detained at the Hyundai production plant in Georgia.

The raid, which took place at a $7.6 billion facility that employs about 1,200 people, was focused on the construction site for an adjacent battery plant, a joint venture between Hyundai and LG Energy Solution. The battery plant project, known as HL-GA Battery Company, is currently paused as authorities investigate allegations of unlawful employment practices and other serious federal crimes.

LG Energy Solution, a key partner in the joint venture, is closely monitoring the situation and gathering details about the raid. The number of LG Energy Solution employees or Hyundai workers detained is currently unknown.

The Hyundai plant in Georgia is not only a significant player in the automotive industry but also a hub for robotics research. Hyundai-owned Boston Dynamics has been testing robots at the Georgia plant, including the dog-like Spot robot and plans to use the humanoid robot Atlas in the future.

The investigation leading to the raid had been ongoing for several months. This raid is part of a series of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations under President Donald Trump's administration that have targeted various sites including farms, construction sites, restaurants, and auto repair shops.

The majority of those detained were from South Korea. The Pew Research Center reports that the U.S. labor force lost more than 1.2 million immigrants from January through July. Governor Kathy Hochul expressed outrage over the raid, with concerns about its impact on the local community and economy.

Despite the raid, operations at Hyundai's EV manufacturing plant in Georgia were not interrupted. HL-GA Battery Company, the joint venture between Hyundai and LG, is cooperating with authorities to ensure a swift and fair resolution to the situation. The construction site for the battery plant is expected to resume operations once the investigation is complete.
