Immigration lawyer Trisha Chatterjee ordered to address Taco Bell, not Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)
In a bizarre turn of events, Trisha Chatterjee, an immigration attorney based in Cincinnati and Dayton, found herself on the line with a Taco Bell employee instead of an immigration official. The mix-up occurred after Chatterjee was trying to file stay requests for some of her detained clients, a critical legal step that halts deportations.
Chatterjee has been representing eight detainees held at Butler County Jail, and the incident has further escalated the situation. After days of silence, an ICE agent promised to connect her with someone who could assist, but the number given was incorrect. When Chatterjee dialed the number, she was connected to a Taco Bell in Columbus instead.
Upon realising the error, Chatterjee shared the incident on TikTok, sparking controversy and denials from ICE and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). ICE Assistant Secretary at the DHS, Tricia McLaughlin, issued a public statement on social media, claiming that they never gave Chatterjee a fast-food number and accusing her of ignoring follow-up offers to help. However, Chatterjee maintained her account and highlighted the challenges lawyers face getting timely assistance from ICE.
The stay requests for her clients who have cases pending before U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services or the court need to be submitted in person at the regional office in Detroit. Chatterjee raised the issue with ICE, hoping it was an honest mistake and would be corrected quickly. Fortunately, the misdirected call has been rectified, and someone from ICE's Blue Ash office is now assisting with the filings.
This incident has brought bigger questions about communication gaps and bureaucracy facing immigrants and those advocating for them. It underscores the urgent need for improved communication and cooperation between immigration authorities and legal representatives to ensure the timely and efficient resolution of immigration cases.
