Implementation of a Regular Varicella (Chickenpox) Immunization Scheme
The Welsh government has announced the introduction of a universal varicella vaccination programme, set to commence in January 2026. This move follows the recommendation made by the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) on 14 November 2023.
Varicella, commonly known as chickenpox, is a highly-contagious infectious disease caused by the varicella zoster virus. It affects most children, but can be caught at any age. Evidence from other countries shows that vaccination can decrease the number of varicella cases and prevent severe cases and other serious complications.
The new vaccination programme aims to protect citizens and reduce pressure on the health service. The JCVI suggested the vaccination should be offered in a two-dose programme at 12 and 18 months of age using the combined MMRV (measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella) vaccine. The 18-month varicella vaccination appointment will be introduced as part of the new vaccination programme.
Some children can develop complications from varicella, such as bacterial infection, skin lesions, encephalitis, pneumonitis, and stroke. These complications can lead to hospitalization and, in rare cases, death. The JCVI's advice now includes a catch-up for children up to six-years-old to prevent a gap in immunity.
The statement emphasizes the importance of vaccinations in providing protection for individuals and their communities. Vaccinations are the most effective way to prevent many infectious diseases. The new varicella vaccination programme will align with the planned childhood immunisation schedule changes in January 2026.
NHS Wales organisations will confirm planning assumptions for the introduction of the new varicella vaccination programme in Wales. The statement is being issued during recess to keep members informed. The new vaccination programme gives hope for further reduction of varicella disease and infection.
Members can request a further statement or questions on the varicella vaccination programme when the Senedd returns. The new varicella vaccination programme is a significant step towards ensuring the health and wellbeing of the citizens of Wales.
