Boxer Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Arrested and Deported Amidst Allegations of Cartel Involvement

Boxing legend Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. is currently in a prison in the northern state of Sonora, Mexico, following his deportation from the United States. The deportation comes after a series of legal troubles that have plagued the boxer in recent years.

Chavez was arrested in the U.S. last month, accused of cartel involvement. The arrest occurred days after Chavez lost a high-profile boxing fight to Jake Paul. The connection to the cartel is said to be through a prior relationship with the now-deceased son of cartel leader Joaquin Guzman.

Investigations into Chavez began in 2019, according to Mexico attorney general Alejandro Gertz Manero. Chavez has ties to the Sinaloa Cartel, and his spouse has been connected to the same cartel.

Chavez's legal troubles in the U.S. began in 2012 when he was convicted of drunken driving and served 13 days in jail. In January 2024, he was arrested on gun charges for allegedly possessing two AR-style ghost rifles. He was also arrested for overstaying his visa and lying on a green card application.

Chavez applied for Lawful Permanent Resident status in April 2024, based on his marriage to a U.S. citizen. However, he was deported from the United States shortly after. The information about Chavez's prison admission and deportation was shared anonymously with The Associated Press.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed Chavez's deportation during a news conference on Tuesday. Chavez was arrested by ICE on July 2, in Los Angeles. He was told he would be coming to Mexico after his deportation.

It is worth noting that investigations related to suspicion of arms and drug trafficking and connections to the Sinaloa Cartel in Mexico are associated with leading members of drug cartels who have been extradited to the United States. The Mexican government handed over 26 detainees to the US, including key cartel figures. However, specific individual names are not mentioned in the available sources.

Chavez's arrest warrant in Mexico for alleged arms and drug trafficking remains outstanding. The details of his imprisonment and legal proceedings in Mexico are yet to be disclosed.
