In light of recent developments, San Francisco becomes a safer city - a credit to the Republicans.

San Francisco, a city traditionally known for its progressive politics, is experiencing a significant shift in its public safety landscape. Crime in the city is down 27% year-over-year, with petty theft, shoplifting, and other forms of larceny nearly halved from their historical peak. This decline, however, has not been solely attributed to the city's establishment Left, but rather the policies of the new mayor, Daniel Lurie.

Lurie, a candidate endorsed by San Francisco Republicans, has been in office for six months and boasts a 73% approval rating. His policies, which include investigating San Francisco's nonprofit industrial complex, prosecuting quality-of-life crimes, targeting drug traffickers, and clearing encampments, seem to be bearing fruit.

One of Lurie's most notable actions was directing his police force to blitz open-air drug markets and arrest dealers en masse. While the exact number of drug dealers deported is not clear, a significant percentage are believed to be illegal aliens from Honduras.

The quality of life in San Francisco has also seen an improvement. According to a recent San Francisco Chronicle poll, 57% of respondents describe it as excellent or good, up from 39% in 2024. The number of tent encampments in the city has plummeted 85% since the pandemic's early days.

However, crime hotspots downtown remain stubbornly chaotic due to lenient sentencing by state court judges. This leniency has let repeat offenders go with a slap on the wrist, despite aggressive prosecution by Boudin's replacement, Brooke Jenkins.

The law of parsimony suggests that declining crime in San Francisco and the deportation of many of the individuals generating that crime are at least somewhat related. Federal agencies and courts have filled the gap created by San Francisco's prosecutors and judges for years.

Republicans, including members of the Briones Society, played a significant role in the successful recall of San Francisco's district attorney, Chesa Boudin. The number of Republicans in San Francisco has reached its highest level since 2013 and is up nearly 20 percent in the last three years alone, with scores of new Republicans coming from the Asian American community, a community feeling betrayed by the Left on issues like public safety and education.

The six conservative justices on the U.S. Supreme Court also put an end to the requirement for cities to let homeless individuals erect semipermanent structures in the middle of public walkways unless authorities could prove that they had an available shelter bed for every homeless person in the county.

While reliable data on deportations in California's Northern District have yet to be released, Trump and his border czar Tom Homan's expanded use of fast-track deportation has redoubled Washington's efforts. The exact impact of these efforts on San Francisco's crime rate remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: the city's public safety environment is improving.
