Increase in Apprentice Numbers within the Craft Industry
In a promising development for the craft industry in Baden-Württemberg, a total of 18,267 new training contracts were registered in the past year, marking a 2.3% increase compared to the previous year. This growth has been observed across various sectors, including construction, food trade, retail trade, and motor vehicle trade.
The increase in training contracts is a testament to the growing demand for skilled craftsmen in the region. Rainer Reichhold, President of Handwerk BW, has expressed his satisfaction with this trend but also voiced concern about the demand for training positions falling short of the training offer. He suggests that there could be approximately 22,000 training positions available, nearly 4,000 more than the current number of young people learning a craft in Baden-Württemberg.
To address this issue, Reichhold and the President of the State Crafts Association have called for a greater focus on craft professions in orientation events at grammar schools. They believe that the new school law, which requires orientation towards vocational training, should be implemented immediately to encourage more students to consider a career in the craft industry.
The nationwide week of apprenticeships, currently underway, serves to highlight the importance of vocational training and the various opportunities available in the craft sector. Over 75% of the new apprentices in Baden-Württemberg in 2022 who completed nine years of general education had obtained a Hauptschulabschluss (basic secondary school certificate). This indicates a growing recognition of the value of vocational training among students with a diverse range of educational backgrounds.
The positive development in the craft industry in Baden-Württemberg is a promising sign for the future of the region's economy.
