Migrant count at Poland's border with Belarus experiences another upward trend - Increase in Migrant Arrivals Recorded at Poland's Belarus Border
In the summer of 2022, Poland has seen a significant rise in illegal border crossings from Belarus. Between June and August, the number of attempted entries has more than doubled, reaching 13,800 compared to 7,500 in the same period last year.
This surge in migration is being linked to pressure on the West by Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko. The European Union and Poland have accused Lukashenko of orchestrating the movement of migrants from crisis regions to the EU's external border with Poland.
To secure its border, Poland has installed a 5.5-meter-high fence and an electronic surveillance system. This border, which is a 400-kilometer long stretch, also forms the EU's external border.
The increased attempts to illegally enter Poland from Belarus have led to the extension of the restricted zone along the border. Managed by the Ministry of Interior in Warsaw, the restricted zone is currently in effect until December 4, 2022. The zone, which is 200 meters deep and up to four kilometers at some points, only allows security forces and residents to enter.
Journalists and aid organizations seeking to cover the ongoing situation along the Poland-Belarus border may find their access restricted due to the extension of the restricted zone. So far, humanitarian organizations have not received permission to enter the restricted zone declared by the Polish government.
Many of the migrants attempting to enter Poland from Belarus are originating from crisis regions. They aim to continue their journey to Germany from Poland. The ongoing tense situation along the Poland-Belarus border has been a cause of concern for both Poland, an EU and NATO member, and Belarus, a Russian ally.
The Ministry of Interior in Warsaw is closely monitoring the situation and the increase in attempts to illegally enter Poland from Belarus this summer. The electronic surveillance system installed on Poland's border with Belarus is part of the security measures taken to secure the border.
The Belarusian leader, Alexander Lukashenko, has not yet commented on the accusations of orchestrating the movement of migrants to the EU's external border with Poland. The situation remains a complex issue, with implications for both Europe and its eastern neighbours.
