Increase in the Reward Fund for the 2025 Hedera Africa Hackathon, Now Valued at $2 Million
In a significant move towards promoting the adoption of decentralized technologies, the Hedera Web3 Hackathon took place in Tunisia from January 26-28, 2024. This event was co-organized by Hedera and Dar Blockchain.
The Hedera Web3 Hackathon was not just a standalone event, but part of a larger initiative - the Hedera Africa Hackathon, a Pan-African competition offering over one million dollars in prize money. This hackathon aims to mobilize over 10,000 participants in 16 countries.
The partnership between Hedera, Dar Blockchain, and the Orange Digital Center (ODC) network is a testament to the commitment towards education, innovation, and the promotion of decentralized technologies. The ODC network, known as a lever for digital inclusion in Middle East and Africa, has partnered with The Hashgraph Association (THA) and Dar Blockchain to deploy a certifying training program in Hedera technology within its centres in 16 countries.
This training aims to equip young people, professionals, and project leaders with solid skills in blockchain and Web3 for the Hedera Africa Hackathon. The hackathon will take place online and in person, with physical spaces offering participants access to technical infrastructure, personalized mentoring, and strategic networking.
The Hedera Africa Hackathon was launched on August 1, 2025, in partnership with the Exponential Science Foundation. One of the most promising projects from this hackathon is the eCedi, a Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC), built on the Hedera Hashgraph Network. The Bank of Ghana announced that the eCedi is token-based.
While the winners of the first Hedera Hackathon in Tunisia in 2024 are yet to be announced, the event marked a significant step towards the adoption of decentralized technologies in Africa. The Hedera Web3 Hackathon in Tunisia was indeed the inaugural African Hedera Hackathon, signaling a promising future for the integration of blockchain and Web3 technologies in the continent.
