Record-Breaking Summer Travel and Climate Impact in the UK

The summer of 2025 has proven to be a significant season for travel and climate awareness in the United Kingdom. According to the Met Office, June 2025 was the warmest on record for England, with an average temperature of 16.9°C, breaking the previous record of 16.7°C set in 2023. The UK as a whole experienced an average temperature of 15.2°C, making it the second warmest on record, behind 15.8°C in 2023.

This warmer weather has led to a surge in travel, particularly towards coastal stations. The Rail Delivery Group, the organisation that represents the rail industry, has noticed an increase in rail traffic towards coastal stations across the UK. The North East, South East, and East Anglia have seen increases of 25%, 32%, and 18% respectively compared to the same period in 2024.

Jacqueline Starr, Executive Chair and Chief Executive Officer of Rail Delivery Group, attributes this increased travel to changing temperatures and weather patterns. She stated that summer getaways to the coast directly correspond to Met Office patterns for temperature spikes and areas with the driest conditions.

The rail industry's impact on the local economy is substantial. It is estimated that the rail industry contributed £678 million to the areas departed from by families traveling this summer. At the destinations, the impact is expected to be greater, with an estimated £916 million driving microeconomics throughout the UK.

The Rail Delivery Group also emphasises that traveling by train is better for the climate. Many Brits are opting to spend their weekends at the sea or are choosing to make day trips to the coast during the summer, reducing carbon emissions compared to car travel.

Coastal stations across the UK have seen a significant increase in tourist numbers arriving by train during the Summer of 2025. The most popular days for visiting coastal stations, according to the Rail Delivery Group's data, are Friday to Monday. However, no specific data was provided on which regions in Great Britain in August 2025 have the highest growth rates of tourists traveling by train to coastal resorts.

Most of the travelers towards coastal stations by train tend to live in the same region, with 47% residing locally. This local travel indicates a growing trend of staycations, where Brits are choosing to holiday in the UK rather than abroad.

The UK has had its warmest summer on record, with a mean temperature of 16.10°C, surpassing the previous record of 15.76°C and pushing the summer of 1976 out of the top 5 warmest summers. August 2025 is expected to break the record for the highest number of visitors to coastal stations compared to the same period in 2024.

The Met Office, the United Kingdom's national weather and climate service, provided this analysis on the correlation between temperature and travel patterns. As the UK continues to experience warmer summers, it is likely that the trend of increased travel to coastal stations will continue.
