Increase in trainee numbers within the craft industry is observed once more
The craft industry in Baden-Württemberg is experiencing a positive development, as reported by Handwerk BW. The number of newly concluded training contracts in the craft industry has increased for the second year in a row, with a total of 18,267 new contracts registered. However, there is still a gap of 4,000 unfilled training positions.
Rainer Reichhold, President of Handwerk BW, stated that the craft industry could have taken on around 22,000 more young people. This shortage is a concern, especially considering the significant increases in some construction professions, such as painters and carpenters.
The nationwide week of apprenticeships is currently underway, aiming to attract more young people to the industry. Over 75 percent of the new apprentices have a secondary school or intermediate school leaving certificate.
Wolfgang Leja, a representative of the State Crafts Association, demands immediate implementation of the requirement for grammar schools to orient towards vocational training. This move could help address the issue of the trend towards the Abitur, which may not adequately serve the needs of the craft industry.
The goal is to attract more Abitur students to the craft industry. The Educational Center for Timber Construction in Biberach is taking steps to achieve this by offering practical training, dual studies, and seminars to prepare skilled workers for the timber construction trades. This initiative aims to address workforce gaps such as the roughly 4,000 unfilled apprenticeship positions in crafts.

It's worth noting that there were also increases in the motor vehicle trade, and in the food trade and retail trade. The total number of young people learning a craft in Baden-Württemberg is approximately 44,000. Despite the progress, the industry continues to grapple with the 4,000-strong apprenticeship gap, a challenge that needs immediate attention and collective effort.
