Increased apple production anticipated in Germany, surpassing the estimated yield for this year's harvest
In an exciting development for German fruit growers, the country is set to witness a significant increase in the apple harvest for 2025. According to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the upcoming harvest is expected to reach 1,009,000 tons, marking the first time since 2022 that this figure surpasses the million-ton mark.
The positive harvest expectations are attributed to mild weather conditions during the blossoming period and the absence of frost and hail events in most growing regions. These favourable conditions have led to a 15.7% increase in the apple harvest compared to the previous year.
Baden-Württemberg and Lower Saxony are the two German states that account for the majority of apple-growing areas in the country. Together, they make up 61.1% of the apple-growing area and produce more than two-thirds of the domestic apples. In 2025, Baden-Württemberg is expected to harvest 362,000 tons of apples, while Lower Saxony will yield 330,000 tons.
The most important growing regions for apples are in Baden-Württemberg (Lake Constance region) and Lower Saxony (Old Land). These regions will cover a total of 20,000 hectares for apple cultivation in 2025, making them the most significant apple-growing areas in the country.
While the apple harvest is set to increase, the plum and prune harvest is expected to remain at average levels in 2025. The plum and prune harvest for the year is estimated to be around 44,500 tons. The largest growing areas for these fruits are in Baden-Württemberg with 1,700 hectares and in Rhineland-Palatinate with 900 hectares.
In Baden-Württemberg, the plum and prune harvest for 2025 is estimated to be 17,200 tons, a decrease of almost a third (-32.7%) compared to 2024. This decrease is due to the exceptionally good harvest in 2024, while other growing regions experienced significant yield losses. In contrast, Rhineland-Palatinate is expected to see an increase in its plum and prune harvest, with a projected yield of 11,000 tons, almost double the previous year's figure (+46.5%).
Apples will be grown on an area of 32,700 hectares nationwide in 2025, making them the most harvested tree fruit in Germany. Plums and prunes, on the other hand, will be grown on an area of 4,100 hectares for commercial fruit production.
In conclusion, the upcoming apple harvest in Germany is predicted to be a record-breaking one, with Baden-Württemberg and Lower Saxony contributing the majority of the produce. While the plum and prune harvest is expected to remain at average levels, there are significant regional differences in the year-over-year comparison.
