Rising Road Fatalities in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Prompt Call for Safety Measures
Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (MV) is currently grappling with a concerning trend of increasing traffic fatalities. According to data, MV had 35 traffic deaths in the previous year, but in 2022, it experienced a significant increase to 59 traffic deaths. This unfortunate development makes MV the German federal state with the highest number of traffic fatalities.
The safety and quality assurance organisation, Dekra, has taken notice of this trend and is advocating for structural measures on rural roads in MV. Mario Schwarz, the regional manager for Dekra East Germany, made this call in Schwerin, MV.
Schwarz highlighted that the number of fatalities involving collisions with roadside trees has been increasing in MV for several years. In response, Dekra has advocated for a significant increase in the installation of guardrails on rural roads in MV.
Excessive speed is considered the main cause of accidents in MV, and Schwarz believes that more guardrails on rural roads could help reduce the number of fatalities. To further address the issue, Dekra has also called on the Ministry of the Interior to significantly intensify police traffic enforcement in MV.
Interestingly, the state of Brandenburg has been able to substantially reduce the number of fatalities on rural roads through extensive expansion of guardrails, according to Dekra. This suggests that similar measures could be effective in reducing traffic fatalities in MV.
In the past few years, the number of fatalities in MV has been on a steady rise. In 2021, there were 17 such fatalities, which increased to 21 in the following year, 27 in 2023, and 31 last year. This alarming trend has prompted Dekra to take action and call for immediate measures to address the issue.
With the increasing number of traffic deaths in MV, it is clear that action needs to be taken to ensure the safety of road users. The call for more guardrails on rural roads and increased police enforcement is a step in the right direction towards making MV's roads safer.
