Increased Police Presence at the Latvian Border, Reinforced by Estonia's Forces
The Estonian Police and Border Guard Board (PPA) has once again sent a team to the Robežnieki border region in southeast Latvia, in a bid to help manage the ongoing crisis of illegal border crossings.
The PPA's second rotation of ESTPOL10, led by Kirill Shchepanov, has recently been deployed to the area. Shchepanov has previous deployment experience, making him well-equipped to handle the challenging situation.
The first rotation of ESTPOL10, deployed two weeks ago, received praise from the Latvian Border Guard for their successful efforts in catching illegal border crossers and a person involved in transporting them. However, no specific information was provided about the success of the second rotation.
The situation on the border is a shared problem, according to Veiko Kommusaar, the PPA's deputy director general for border management. Migrants have been crossing the border into the EU via Poland, Latvia, and Lithuania since the spring of 2021, assisted by the Belarusian authorities.
In recent years, the PPA has sent units to Lithuania and now to Latvia, in response to requests for help from its counterparts. On Monday, June 2, State Border Guard officers prevented 86 people from illegally crossing the Latvian-Belarusian state border.
So far this year, a total of 4,402 people have been prevented from illegally crossing the state border. This is a significant number, reflecting the ongoing challenge faced by border authorities.
It's worth noting that the EU overall saw a drop in irregular migrants in an unspecified year. However, in 2024, the "Eastern Borders route" (Belarus' border with Poland, Latvia, and Lithuania) experienced a 192 percent increase in irregular migrants.
The PPA was requested by Latvia for a team of people with crowd control training, but no further information was provided about the person involved in transporting illegal border crossers.
As the crisis continues, the cooperation between border authorities of different countries remains crucial in managing the situation effectively. The PPA's commitment to assisting Latvia in this challenging time is commendable.
