Dormagen's ED Drives City's Future with Sustainable Construction and Renovation Projects

The municipal enterprise Dormagen (ED) is at the forefront of shaping the city's future, with a focus on education, heritage preservation, and modern infrastructure. One of the most significant projects on the ED's agenda this year is the expansion and renovation of the Offene Ganztagsschule (OGS) Stürzelberg.

The OGS Stürzelberg project includes the new construction of a sports hall and the design of outdoor facilities. This comprehensive expansion and renovation, also managed by the ED, aims to meet at least the DGNB standard in silver, demonstrating the enterprise's commitment to sustainability.

Another notable educational project is the new Realschule Hackenbroich, which will use green steel, marking an important step towards sustainable construction. The ED is also developing a long-term personnel strategy to address future challenges, such as the shortage of skilled workers, digitization, and changing fields of tasks.

The renovation of the historic Alte Schule in Delhoven has been completed, and it will reopen as a community center in December. The construction costs for this project remained below the budgeted funds at around 1.2 million euros. The name of the employed head of the "Alte Schule" in Delhoven, who will oversee the center's operations, has not been explicitly stated.

In addition to educational projects, the ED is also responsible for constructing new facilities. The new fire station in Stürzelberg, completed in 13 months, is an example of this. The station, built to the DGNB gold standard, spans 1,159 square meters and includes a vehicle hall, workshops, and administrative areas. For the first time, it will also provide rooms for the children's fire brigade.

Dr. Martin Brans, Technical Deputy Mayor, stated that the ED is more than just a construction service provider. It acts as the engine for modern infrastructure and takes responsibility for safe, functional, and sustainable buildings in Dormagen.

The construction costs for the new fire station in Stürzelberg amounted to 6.3 million euros. The ED is also working on structural topics in the background for more quality and efficiency in the long term. This includes the establishment of digital processes, systematic documentation of all properties, and an improved ticket system for internal requests.

In 2025, the ED will implement numerous major projects while working on internal improvements. These projects, along with the ongoing educational projects, are among the most complex construction projects Dormagen has ever undertaken. The ED is committed to delivering these projects with the same dedication to sustainability, quality, and efficiency that has characterised its work so far.
