Direct Trucking Company Drivers Association Stands Neutral on NUPENG Strike
In a move that could have significant implications for the upcoming industrial action, the Direct Trucking Company Drivers Association (DTCDA) has announced it will not participate in the planned strike by the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), scheduled to begin on Monday, September 8, 2025.
In a statement issued after its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Abuja on Saturday, the DTCDA made it clear that it has no intention of joining issues with NUPENG. The association, which represents the interests of truck drivers, has stressed that it is not a union and has no affiliation with NUPENG.
The DTCDA's stance on the NUPENG strike adds a new dimension to the brewing industrial action, as the potential impact on fuel supply and transportation nationwide is a concern. The association has urged against coercion of drivers into membership and warned against attempts to compel drivers into joining unions against their will.
The DTCDA has reiterated the constitutional right to freedom of association and is committed to national service and constitutional values. The association's National President, Enoch Kanawa, has emphasised that the DTCDA is committed to discharging its duties in accordance with the law and has not made any demands regarding the NUPENG strike.
Furthermore, the DTCDA has not been involved in any disputes threatening telecom services across Nigeria and has not issued any warning on the suspension of fuel supply. The association aims to prevent the public from being misled regarding its involvement in the strike.
The DTCDA's refusal to participate in the strike does not imply support for or against the NUPENG strike. The association has distanced itself from the nationwide strike by NUPENG and has asked stakeholders not to politicize its position.
