India-China Interaction at SCO Summit: Modi Engages with Xi, Focus on India-China Diplomatic Ties

Prime Minister Modi Visits China for SCO Summit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in Tianjin, China, marking his first visit to the country in more than seven years. The visit comes as both nations agreed to maintain peace at contested frontiers, restore border trade, and resume direct flights.

The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, which is scheduled for 31 August to 1 September, is the largest so far, according to China's Assistant Foreign Minister Liu Bin. The SCO is a 10-member bloc comprising Russia, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, and China, which is this year's rotating chair of the bloc.

Prime Minister Modi's visit follows recent diplomatic outreach, including a trip by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi to New Delhi last year. Wang emphasized the importance of a "healthy and stable relationship" benefiting both countries, and the visit aimed to foster partnership rather than rivalry.

Upon arrival, Prime Minister Modi was welcomed with performances of Indian classical music and dance. He also posted a message on social media about looking forward to the SCO Summit and meeting world leaders.

The highlight of Prime Minister Modi's visit is a bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping. The talks between the two leaders are expected to focus on economic cooperation, regional stability, and normalizing bilateral ties.

In a recent interview with Japan's The Yomiuri Shimbun, Prime Minister Modi stressed the importance of stable ties between India and China for regional and global peace. The summit follows Washington's decision to implement 50 per cent tariffs, including an additional 25 per cent on India for importing Russian oil.

The leaders' summit will be held on Monday, and most leaders are expected to stay beyond the two-day summit to witness China's largest military parade on September 3. Prime Minister Modi is also scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin and several other global leaders attending the summit.

The reason for China's diplomatic initiative to send Foreign Minister Wang Yi to New Delhi last year was to improve bilateral relations and discuss restarting border trade and cooperation, amid a positive trend following tensions and geopolitical uncertainties, including the US-China trade conflict under Donald Trump.

Prime Minister Modi last visited China in June 2018, while President Xi was last in India in October 2019. Xi Jinping will elaborate on China's new vision and propositions for the SCO in his keynote speech at the summit. The strained trade relations between India and the United States are due to the imposition of these tariffs.

In conclusion, the SCO summit in Tianjin promises to be a significant event, with Prime Minister Modi's visit and bilateral meetings with global leaders, including President Xi Jinping, being a key highlight. The discussions at the summit are expected to focus on economic cooperation, regional stability, and normalizing bilateral ties between nations.
