In a significant move for the electric vehicle (EV) industry in India, Ola Electric, a leading player in the sector, has announced its plan to integrate 4680 battery cells into its electric vehicles, starting from early 2025. This decision marks a strategic shift towards reducing the cost of EV production and minimising dependency on imports.

The 4680 cells, similar in design to the cylindrical cells patented by Tesla, are a type of battery cell that Ola plans to manufacture at its newly operational Gigafactory. This move places Ola Electric among an elite class of manufacturers to commercially use the technology associated with the 4680 cells.

Bhavish Aggarwal, the founder and managing director of Ola Electric, made the announcement during a press conference. He emphasised that the integration of these cells is part of Ola's strategy to reduce reliance on imported components, thereby contributing to the advancement of the EV industry in India.

By using the 4680 cells, Ola aims to decrease overall EV production costs, making electric vehicles more affordable for a larger segment of the Indian population. This move aligns with the company's goal to make sustainable mobility accessible and affordable for all.

The integration of the 4680 cells is a key component in Ola's strategy to reduce its reliance on imported components. By manufacturing these cells in-house, Ola Electric hopes to boost domestic production and support the growth of the Indian EV industry.

This development is a significant step forward for the Indian EV sector, as it demonstrates the commitment of domestic manufacturers to drive innovation and reduce costs. With Ola Electric joining the ranks of companies using the 4680 cells, we can expect to see more affordable and sustainable electric vehicles hitting the roads in India in the near future.
