India's Asia Cup team unveiling highlights: Gill's comeback, Jitesh's opportunity
India Announces Asia Cup T20I Squad
India has named its squad for the upcoming Asia Cup T20I tournament, with Harshit Rana earning a spot as the third seamer. The announcement was made on August 19.
Rana, who made his T20I debut against England earlier this year, brings some much-needed depth to India's fast bowling stocks, which have been thin due to concerns about the injury-prone status of Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh. Rana's batting ability is a rare bonus among Indian quicks, providing a valuable all-rounder option.
Bumrah and Arshdeep are expected to start as the two seamers in the T20I squad. Shubman Gill, named as the vice-captain, will also be a key player with the ball. Gill, who last played a T20I in July 2024, has shown improvement as a T20 batter in recent seasons and is seen by the BCCI as a potential future face of Indian cricket across formats.
The squad also sees the continued absence of Mohammed Siraj from the T20I format, with the fast bowler not having played in the T20I setup since July 2024. Varun Chakravarthy has taken Kuldeep Yadav's spot as the frontline spinner in the T20I setup.
Jitesh Sharma is the only other wicketkeeper in the squad and could be playing in the middle order. Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson have been India's regular opening pair in T20Is.
Shreyas Iyer, who had a successful IPL season, leading Punjab Kings to the final and scoring 604 runs at a strike rate of 175, is not in the Asia Cup T20I squad due to a lack of vacancy in the batting order.
Prasidh Krishna has been named in the standbys for the Asia Cup T20I squad. Krishna, who has only played five T20Is, last featured in 2023.
The Indian T20I squad for the Asia Cup 2025 is as follows:
- Rohit Sharma (Captain)
- KL Rahul (Vice-Captain)
- Virat Kohli
- Suryakumar Yadav
- Deepak Hooda
- Rishabh Pant (Wicketkeeper)
- Dinesh Karthik (Wicketkeeper)
- Hardik Pandya
- Ravindra Jadeja
- Yuzvendra Chahal
- R Ashwin
- Bhuvneshwar Kumar
- Arshdeep Singh
- Jasprit Bumrah
- Harshit Rana
- Shubman Gill (Vice-Captain)
Standbys:
- Prasidh Krishna

- Jitesh Sharma (Wicketkeeper)
The Asia Cup 2025 is set to be an exciting tournament, with India looking to defend their title. The tournament will be a great opportunity for new players like Harshit Rana to shine on the international stage.
