India's Prime Minister, Modi, reinforces India-US bonds following Trump's threat regarding Russian oil and tariffs.
In the recent SCO summit in Tianjin, US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India held a meeting, but the event was not without controversy. According to reports, Trump's aides have accused India of fuelling Russia's war economy through oil trade.
Kevin Hassett, Director of the National Economic Council, expressed his disappointment over India's funding of Russia's Ukraine war, and Peter Navarro, another aide to President Trump, claimed that India's oil trade funds Russia's war. The advisers of the US President also criticized India's trade relations with Russia and urged the EU to impose 100% tariffs on India and China due to their ties with Russia.
Trump himself has not directly responded to these comments, but he has previously posted on Truth Social that the US had "lost India and Russia to deepest, darkest China." Trump also stated that India faces a 50% tariff from the US, and he expressed his disappointment over India's purchase of Russian crude oil.
Prime Minister Modi, however, has not responded publicly to the criticism from the US aides. He did reaffirm India's Comprehensive and Global Strategic Partnership with the United States as "very positive and forward-looking" during the SCO summit.
It is important to note that Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin were also present at the SCO summit in Tianjin. The US aides have continued to criticize India's actions regarding Russia and tariffs, but they have not provided any direct response from President Trump regarding his comments about the US losing India and Russia to China.
As the situation develops, it will be interesting to see how India responds to the criticism from the US aides and how the US-India relationship evolves in the coming months.
