India's Unexpected Strategies Amidst Controversy Surrounding Bihar's Police Chief: Will They Bear Fruit for Shikha Mukerjee?
In a significant turn of events, opposition parties in India have come together to challenge the Election Commission's decision to remove 6.5 lakh voters from the electoral rolls in Bihar. This move, known as the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), has become a point of contention, potentially disenfranchising lakhs of voters.
The opposition parties, collectively, attempted to march to the Election Commission's office on August 11, demonstrating their unity. The venerable Sharad Pawar, the veteran Mallikarjun Kharge, and the younger generation leadership of the principal opposition bloc parties were present at the protest.
The Supreme Court has ordered the Election Commission to publish the names of deleted voters and the grounds for cancellation of the right to vote. This order tacitly accepted Yogendra Yadav's analysis of the deletion of 65 lakh voters in Bihar, which has been a subject of controversy.
The BJP, the only party that did not question or object to the SIR in Bihar, has faced criticism for its stance. The opposition parties have challenged the BJP's claims to represent 140 crore Indians, particularly regarding the 7.89 crore voters of Bihar who are threatened with disenfranchisement.
The opposition has been challenging the Modi government's performance, both inside and outside Parliament. The Pahalgam killings and the conduct of Operation Sindoor have been sources of controversy for the Modi government. The SIR issue, however, is not a routine issue in Indian elections; it is a confrontation over people's freedoms and constitutional guarantees.
The BJP predicted that the opposition's march would lead to the breakup of the INDIA bloc. However, the Aam Aadmi Party participated in the march despite announcing its exit from the INDIA bloc. The EC's day out and the start of a 1,300-km yatra by Rahul Gandhi, Tejashwi Yadav, and other INDIA bloc leaders is a measure of the chief election commissioner's jitteriness about the election in Bihar.
The Supreme Court observed that a fair procedure is required for actions that can deprive a citizen of the right to vote. The EC called on the opposition to "show the proof or apologise" regarding the deletion of voters in Bihar. The opposition parties, however, maintain that their role has transformed into a resistance against depriving people of their rights, making it a movement to defend the rights of people.
The Modi government has faced a series of political setbacks, making 2025 one of its worst years. The United States has imposed tariffs affecting dollar-earning exports, causing concerns for marginalized fishing communities along the east coast. These challenges have only strengthened the opposition's resolve to stand up for the rights of the people.
