Graham Greene, a celebrated Indigenous actor known for his roles in films such as "Dances with Wolves" and "The Green Mile," has passed away at the age of 73. The news of his death was announced on Monday in Stratford, Ontario.
Greene began his acting career in the 1970s, making his debut in the Canadian drama series "The Great Detective" and the 1983 film "Running Brave." However, it was his role as elder Chief Rains Fall in the massively popular 2018 video game "Red Dead Redemption 2" that brought him to a wider audience.
Greene is best known for his role as Kicking Bird in the 1990 film "Dances with Wolves," for which he received an Oscar nomination. The movie, directed by and starring Kevin Costner, won seven awards, including the top prize of best picture and best director for Costner.
After his role in "Dances with Wolves," Greene appeared in a series of critically acclaimed films, including "Thunderheart," "Maverick," "Die Hard with a Vengeance," "The Green Mile," "Transamerica," "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2," and "Wind River" among others.

The cause of Greene's death was an unspecified illness. He is survived by his wife, Hilary Blackmore, and his daughter Lilly Lazare-Greene.
Tributes for Greene poured in from various actors and colleagues, including Lily Gladstone, Kevin Costner, and D'Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai. Woon-A-Tai, who played Indigenous teenager Bear Smallhill on "Reservation Dogs," expressed appreciation for Greene's impact on Native American representation in film and television.
Costner posted a scene from "Dances with Wolves" on Instagram, expressing gratitude for Greene's work on the film. "Graham Greene was a true gentleman, a man of great talent, and a man of great soul," Costner wrote. "He was a joy to work with and a friend for life."
Greene's Oscar nomination was one of 12 nominations that "Dances with Wolves" earned. In 2002, he was also nominated for an Independent Spirit award for the film "Skins."
