Individual condemned to a year's imprisonment for racially offensive remarks directed towards athlete Iñaki Williams, a Basque footballer of African descent.
In a landmark decision, a football fan of Espanyol has been sentenced for racist discrimination against Athletic's forward, Iñaki Williams, during a league match in 2020. The incident, which took place five years ago at Cornellà stadium, has finally culminated in justice being served.
The sentencing was not as initially planned, as the parties reached an agreement. The fan admitted to the hate crime of racist discrimination and was sentenced to one year in prison, a fine of 1,080 euros, and a ban from attending any football stadium for the next two years.
The incident occurred on January 25, 2020, during the league match between Espanyol and Athletic. In the second half of the match, when Inaki Williams was substituted, a part of the stands shouted monkey noises as he headed towards the bench.
The public prosecutor initially asked for two years in prison, a ban from attending a stadium for five years, and a fine of 5,400 euros. However, the sentences were lower as the accused admitted the facts and testified by videoconference.
The investigation was conducted by the Mossos d'Esquadra, a police force in Catalonia. The Public Prosecutor's Office ordered an investigation, who identified the authors of the insults through security camera images and ticket holder information. Three fans were allegedly identified, one of whom was a minor.
LaLiga initially asked for the same penalty as the Ministry of Public, but the final sentence was handed down by the Barcelona Court. The minor involved in the incident was one of the three fans allegedly identified.
The victim of the racist slurs, Inaki Williams, testified by videoconference in 2021. He reported feeling "humiliated" by the incident. The crime was committed during a league match, a setting where sportsmanship and respect should prevail.
This sentence serves as a reminder that racism has no place in football or any other aspect of life. It is hoped that this decision will deter similar incidents in the future and uphold the values of fairness, respect, and inclusivity that football stands for.
