In Lancaster, Pennsylvania, a dramatic car chase took place on Feb. 19, 2023, when a police officer identified a stolen 2009 Toyota Corolla. The chase, involving weapons, ended on Meadow View Road in Rapho Township after spike strips were used.

Dante James Ashford, a 21-year-old resident of Lancaster, was at the centre of this incident. Ashford was on probation for drug charges from 2022 when he was arrested. Assistant District Attorney Cody Wade stated that the courts had been "burned" by Ashford after trying to rehabilitate him.

Ashford was sentenced to 6 years and 9 months to 15 years in state prison for his role in the car chase. Lancaster Judge Merrill Spahn stated that Ashford's conduct was dangerous and imprisonment was necessary to protect the public.

Three out of the four persons who ran from the car were caught: Ashford, Eric Hammond, and a 17-year-old boy. Hammond, 20, pleaded guilty to his charges of receiving stolen property and evading arrest in April 2024 and was sentenced to five years of probation.

Inside the car, police found a handgun that had been reported stolen by Manheim Township police. Ashford was found guilty of two firearms violations and a charge of evading arrest after a trial in May. He was found not guilty of one count of receiving stolen property.
