In the bustling city of Jersey City, New Jersey, a 45-year-old software engineer named Pavan Kumar Appannagari found himself in an unexpected predicament. Appannagari, like many, was looking to invest for his daughter's future and retirement.

One fateful day, he received an email confirming his signup for a newsletter. Little did he know, this newsletter would lead him down a path of financial turmoil. The newsletter, delivered every morning with the latest news from Lancaster County, contained various articles, including one about a method for seniors to clean gutters, another discussing benefits for seniors born between 1939 and 1969, and even an article mentioning Amazon's hottest selling hearing aid.

However, it was an investment opportunity that caught Appannagari's eye. Dave Zook, a fund manager for Prestige Investment Group, offered him an investment in ATMs. Intrigued, Appannagari invested a total of $208,000 in June 2023 and November 2023. Unfortunately, he never saw a cent of profit.

The investment was part of a $700 million Ponzi scheme orchestrated by Zook and his associates, including Daryl Heller. Heller, who managed the investment through his Paramount Management Group, is also under scrutiny for misrepresenting the number of ATMs in his network and assigning groups of ATMs to multiple owners, as suggested by court filings.

The scheme, unveiled to the public, led to a class-action suit being filed against Zook and three other Heller associates on behalf of 2,700 investors. Jason Kane, an attorney representing the plaintiffs, stated that the victims are "salt-of-the-earth people" who have lost their life savings.
