Staying safe during a heatwave is crucial, especially for children and adolescents. Here are some essential tips to help keep them cool, hydrated, and protected.

Firstly, cooling through water games can be a refreshing way to beat the heat, but it's important to remember that UV radiation is intensified in and around water. So, sufficient sun protection is necessary.

For babies, light, body-covering clothing is recommended instead of sunscreen. A head and neck covering and sun protection are also essential when outdoors.

The German Nutrition Society (DGE) advises that children and adolescents consume fluids in amounts varying by age. Adolescents from 15 years onwards should aim to drink around 2.5 liters of water daily, with about 1.4 liters coming from beverages. Children require less fluid than adolescents. For more detailed recommendations, you can visit the DGE website at https://www.dge.de/wissenschaft/referenzwerte/wasser/.

It's also important to avoid the midday sun or seek cool places or shade. The temperature in parked cars can rise to over 40°C within a few minutes, so children should never be left in them.

Living spaces should be kept as cool as possible during a heatwave. Ventilate early in the morning and at night, and use roller blinds to shade the apartment during the day. Cool towels can be hung up for additional cooling.

Check the room temperature during a heatwave. For babies and toddlers, it should not exceed 26°C. Check the body temperature of your baby/toddler by feeling the spot between the shoulder blades below the neck. The skin here should be warm but not sweaty.

During heatwaves, light and light-colored clothing should be worn. Strenuous activities and vigorous playing should be avoided.

Pay attention to yourself and others during a heatwave and take the first symptoms seriously. A poster titled "Tips for Children" is recommended for heatwave safety advice.

Lastly, remember to wear light meals, such as fruits and vegetables, and eat small portions.

By following these tips, you can help ensure a safe and enjoyable summer for children and adolescents. Stay cool, stay hydrated, and stay safe!
