Gambling Addict in South Whitehall Township Files Class Action Lawsuit Against DraftKings, Alleging Exploitation by Company

Individuals File Lawsuits Against DraftKings, Alleging Exploitation of Gambling Dependencies

In South Whitehall Township, a resident named Avi Setton is part of a group suing DraftKings, a Boston-based online gambling service provider. Setton alleges that he lost a whopping $350,000, despite asking DraftKins to close his account due to gambling addiction issues.

This class action lawsuit, filed last week in federal court, also involves four other Pennsylvania men. They accuse DraftKings of subjecting addicts to manipulative gambling tactics.

The lawsuit unearths that DraftKings might be focusing on gamblers already on self-exclusion lists, making online gambling a hazardous activity for those wrestling with addiction.

The lawsuit further claims that DraftKings tricks gamblers into gambling away their money by offering risk-free promotional bets as bait. This, accompanied by persistently increasing betting, can deplete their funds completely.

These accusations appear to question the company's integrity and responsibility towards its users struggling with gambling addiction. The plaintiffs claim that DraftKings used customer data and behavioral analysis to weed out signs of addiction but continued to pressure these individuals to gamble, often through VIP outreach and personalized solicitations[2][4][5].

Regrettably, Avi Setton, one of the plaintiffs, requested DraftKings to shut his account back in 2019, yet the company took action only in 2024[1][5]. Another plaintiff pointed out that despite being on Pennsylvania's self-exclusion list, he was still able to gamble and received incentives from DraftKings to bet further[5]. These allegations hint at possibly unethical practices by DraftKings.

  3. The lawsuit also claims that DraftKings, through risk-free promotional bets and persistent increases in betting, can cause gamblers to deplete their funds.
  4. Sports betting is also mentioned in the lawsuit, which alleges that DraftKings used customer data to pressure gamblers, including outreach and personalized solicitations, to continue gambling.
  5. The allegations against DraftKings raise concerns about the company's commitment to responsible gambling and its potential unethical practices, particularly regarding the delay in addressing exclusion requests.
