Industry Summits Invitation Extended by Coalition Merz to Steel Sector
In an effort to safeguard the future of Germany's steel industry, Chancellor Friedrich Merz has invited key stakeholders to a summit at the Chancellery. The meeting, set to take place but with the exact date yet to be announced, aims to find solutions that will help the industry continue production in Germany for the long term.
The steel industry is currently grappling with pressure from tariffs imposed by the USA and dumping offers from China, as stated by Chancellor Merz. In addition, domestic crude steel production has dropped by approximately 12 percent to 17.1 million tons in the first half of the year, according to the German Steel Federation.
The summit will involve discussions with producers and employee representatives of the steel industry, as well as representatives of the employees. The objective is to maintain long-term steel production in Germany, and the industry meeting is likely to discuss potential forms of aid for the struggling sector.
Vice Chancellor Lars Klingbeil (SPD) and several federal states have previously called for an industry meeting to discuss possible aid. The increased tariffs on steel and aluminum imports by US President Donald Trump, which rose to 50 percent in early June (from 25 percent previously), have added to the challenges faced by the German steel industry. As a result, hundreds of additional products such as motorcycles and crane vehicles are now subject to steel and aluminum tariffs in the USA.
Furthermore, the German steel industry has been affected by fierce competition, high energy prices, and an economic downturn, which have weakened domestic demand. These factors, combined with the recent developments, have made the need for a summit to address these issues all the more urgent.
Chancellor Merz has emphasized that the methods for achieving the goal of securing long-term steel production in Germany will be discussed during the summit. As the situation unfolds, more details about the summit are expected to be revealed.
