Info Essential for Travelers Regarding the 2026 FIFA World Cup Temporary Camps Prior to Arranging a Journey

The sports tourism trend is soaring, and the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup is no exception. With 48 teams set to compete across North America, finding accommodations near host cities is becoming increasingly challenging.

The World Cup base camps, chosen cities where teams will practice, rest, and perform various activities during the tournament, are expanding the geographic footprint of the event. As of April 2025, there are 62 cities hosting World Cup matches across Mexico, the U.S., and Canada, with more expected to be announced.

Several cities offer equally suitable sports facilities. The Atlanta United Training Centre in Atlanta, the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, the Great Park Sports Complex in Irvine, California, and Kino Sports Complex in Tucson are among the contenders.

However, teams will not know which base camp they will be staying at until after the draw in December 2025. Once the locations are revealed, teams can submit their picks for base camps, likely choosing based on convenience and proximity.

Each base camp must meet stringent criteria. It must have a professional training facility with an approved pitch and player amenities, a handpicked hotel, reliable transportation, medical and emergency services, support for international players, and secure environments. A secure perimeter must be established around the fields and facilities at base camps, with the view obstructed up to over 8 feet high.

Base camps also offer opportunities for local fans to welcome a team into their town and for superfans to congregate. They can provide a chance to explore areas that might not have been visited otherwise.

Interestingly, AmeriStarRail is aiming to connect major cities via a transcontinental train route from New York to Los Angeles by 2026, potentially offering more convenient travel options between host cities and base camps.

However, additional rooms in base camp hotels may not be easy to come by, making early booking essential for those planning to attend the World Cup.

It's important to note that only some cities hosting World Cup matches have top-notch university athletic fields, such as the University of North Texas in Dallas-Denton, Penn State University in State College, Pennsylvania, Coastal Carolina University in Myrtle Beach, University of Kansas in Lawrence, and Kennesaw State University in Atlanta.

The World Cup base camps are selected by the teams that qualify for the tournament. As only 48 teams will qualify for the 2026 World Cup, it is still unclear which of the 62 candidate cities each team will choose for their base camp.

As the countdown to the World Cup continues, anticipation grows for the unveiling of the base camp locations and the start of this exciting sports event.
