The German government's latest draft for games policy has raised concerns within the E-Sports community. According to Jens Wortmann from the North Rhine-Westphalia State Sports Association, the current draft does not adequately address the need for a legally secure and unbureaucratic regulation of charity for sports associations offering E-Sports.
The draft, proposed by Federal Minister of Finance Lars Klingbeil, is based on an outdated text proposal that the traffic light coalition could not agree on. This has led to a draft that does not align with the current government's successful games policy, which has been instrumental in strengthening the games location.
Instead of focusing on outdated debates about youth protection, it is crucial to take the gaming community seriously and grant associations independence. This is a view shared by many within the E-Sports industry, who are pushing for necessary corrections and supplements from their perspective.
The paper still needs to overcome several hurdles before it can come into effect on January 1, 2026. These include approval by the federal cabinet, the Bundestag, and the Bundesrat.

The gaming community in Germany is hopeful that the draft will be revised to better serve their needs and ensure a secure future for E-Sports charitable organisations. The next few months will be crucial in shaping the future of E-Sports in Germany.
