Bottrop Wins European Energy Award for Fourth Time
In a ceremony held at the Josef Albers Museumszentrum Quadrat in Bottrop on June 7, 2021, the city was honoured with the European Energy Award (EEA) for the fourth time. This prestigious award recognises Bottrop's significant efforts in energy and climate protection policy.
Despite being the last Ruhr area city with an active coal mine (Prosper-Haniel), Bottrop has been proactive in pursuing future viability through numerous initiatives as part of Innovation City Ruhr. One of these initiatives is the implementation of the EEA, a system that translates declarations of intent into sustainable energy policy and improves administrative processes and population participation.
The EEA is based on quality management systems from the economy, such as Total Quality Management (TQM), and fits optimally into modern administrative management. It involves a structured process with defined sponsorship, regulations for granting, monitoring, and revoking the award, and an IT-supported audit tool for performance evaluation.
Bottrop's success in implementing its climate protection goals is evident in its high renovation rate. At 3.3 percent, the renovation rate in Bottrop is significantly higher than the national average of one percent. During renovation measures and replacement investments, the use of regenerative energies is continuously checked.
The city's street lighting has also been optimised energetically and converted to LED lights. These measures have contributed to a reduction in energy consumption and an increase in the use of renewable energy sources.
The EEA helps municipalities like Bottrop to reduce energy consumption, increase the use of renewable energy sources, and efficiently use non-renewable resources. The city has been successful in involving society in this process, with intensive persuasion work, free initial consultations, and the use of funding contributing to the higher renovation rate.
On this special day, six municipalities from the Münster region were honoured with the European Energy Award. Alongside Bottrop, the honoured municipalities were Lengerich, Greven, Vreden, Altenberge, and Ladbergen.

Bottrop's commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency is evident in its continued success in the European Energy Award. With clear objectives, detailed collection of performance indicators, their quantification, and a structured controlling and reporting system, Bottrop continues to set an example for other municipalities in Germany and Europe.
