The automotive industry in China continues to evolve, with the latest addition being the Wuling Starlight, a new sedan model unveiled on August 14. This new model is set to join the competitive electric vehicle (EV) market, with both all-electric and plugin hybrid variants scheduled for release in Q4.
The Wuling Starlight shares some design similarities with other popular models. The BEV variant features headlights reminiscent of the Deepal SL03, while the PHEV variant adopts Xpeng-style headlights. From the rear, both variants look very much the same. The exhausts on the PHEV variant are well hidden, further emphasizing its sleek design.
The dimensions of the Wuling Starlight are 4835mm in length, 1860mm in width, and 1515mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2800mm. The BEV variant of the Starlight boasts a 100 kW motor from Inboer Electric Co., Ltd., offering a maximum speed of 150 km/h and a curb weight of 1600 kg. The PHEV variant, on the other hand, has a curb weight of 1695 kg and is powered by a 1.5L Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) from Saike Technology Development Co., Ltd., with a maximum output of 78 kW and a maximum speed of 145 km/h.
The price of the Wuling Starlight is yet to be revealed, but it is expected to be around 150,000 yuan. This puts it in the same price range as the Baojun Cloud, another SGMW production that competes with the BYD Dolphin and VW ID.3, despite starting at 95,800 yuan.
The Baojun Yep city off-roader, another SGMW production, is another example of affordable EVs from the company. It is one of the cutest EVs seen in a long time.
The battery for the Wuling Starlight is supplied by Gotion and is a lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) type. The plug-in hybrid version uses a 20.5 kWh capacity battery.
The Wuling Starlight BEV variant uses a closed-grilled design and LFP batteries, although the capacity hasn't been revealed yet. The Wuling Bingo S EV, another model from Wuling, pre-sale opens at 9,600 USD with 325km and 430km ranges.
The release of the official pictures of the Wuling Starlight was after the government regulator under MIIT exposed the homologation process submissions. The SGMW Wuling Bingo S EV, a competitor of Geely Xingyuan and BYD Seagull, also had its interior unveiled, with the pre-sale open at a competitive price of 9,600 USD.
As GM and SAIC-backed Wuling continues to make strides in the EV market, it's clear that they are committed to offering affordable and competitive options for consumers. With the launch of the Wuling Starlight, they are set to make a significant impact in the EV market.
