Inquiry Ensues Following the Demise of a 16-Year-Old in Friedland

In the small town of Friedland, southern Lower Saxony, a tragic incident has left the community in shock. A 31-year-old Iraqi man is suspected of pushing a 16-year-old girl in front of an oncoming freight train at Friedland station, resulting in her death.

The girl, who hailed from Geisleden, was a promising athlete, regularly commuting to her training facility in Friedland. Her family had fled from Ukraine in 2022 and initially lived in Geisleden, later moving to the Thuringian spa town of Heilbad Heiligenstadt.

Initially, the police assumed an accident as the cause of the girl's death. However, investigations have since revealed that this was not the case. Over 14,000 euros have been collected through two fundraising appeals to cover the funeral costs.

The suspect, who made an asylum application to the Federal Police in Braunschweig in 2022, which was later rejected in December 2022, had exhibited psychological abnormalities on the day of the crime, according to the Public Prosecutor's Office. He was released after a breath alcohol test showed 1.35 per mille and there was no evidence at the time.

Shortly before the crime, the police were called to the station due to a man causing a disturbance. The man in question, later identified as the suspect, was placed in a psychiatric clinic under a detention order.

It remains unclear how the events at the station unfolded just before the girl's death. There is no video surveillance at Friedland station, which is hampering the investigations. The Public Prosecutor's Office in Göttingen stated that DNA traces of the man were found on the victim's shoulder.

The death of the 16-year-old girl has caused great consternation, especially among her family and the community in Geisleden. Lower Saxony's Interior Minister Daniela Behrens (SPD) stated that the case highlights the problems of the Dublin procedure.

The suspect could have been deported to Lithuania since March 2025, but an application for detention pending deportation was rejected by the Regional Court of Hannover in July 2025. In the past, the suspect has been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia.

The investigations are ongoing, with the police still searching for witnesses present on the platform, including a man in a white T-shirt, to clarify the circumstances of the girl's death. The community of Friedland and Geisleden awaits the outcome of the investigation, hoping for justice for the young athlete lost too soon.
