Insider's Guide to Berlin Art Week 2025 Unveiled

Berlin Art Week is set to return from September 10 to September 14, transforming the city into a vibrant hub of artistic expression. This city-wide art festival, now in its annual September edition, attracts over 130,000 visitors and unites commercial galleries, major art institutions, independent project spaces, and artist studios.

Mona Stehle, the director of Berlin Art Week, recommends diving into a specific part of the city and attending as many openings as possible on the first day to get a broad overview of the city's art scene. For those seeking a great mix of perspectives across the scene, Stehle suggests taking one of the Berlin Art Week bullet tours.

The programming of this year's Berlin Art Week reflects current economic and political instability. Featured Night, on Friday, focuses on Berlin's independent scene and special initiatives, while the major group exhibition "Global Fascisms" at Haus der Kulturen der Welt will open on September 13, exploring the aesthetic and political dynamics of fascism.

Berlin Art Week offers free access to many openings and special events, allowing visitors to explore the city's art scene without paying any entrance fees. The Berlin Art Week Garten at the Hamburger Bahnhof serves as a hub of activity during the week, providing information, a place to meet people, and a way to find out what's happening during Berlin Art Week.

In addition to exhibition openings, the festival includes tours, performances, and parties. Gallery Night and Positions Berlin Art Fair take place on Thursday, while Discovering Collections, a recent initiative on Saturday, allows five private collectors to open their homes to the public.

Many artists are being creative in finding more accessible spaces or new ways of collaboration due to financial precarity during Berlin Art Week. This year, Trauma will take over a former church, St Elisabeth, and Passage is staging projects at Hermannplatz U-Bahn and Funkhaus Berlin.

Venues participating in Berlin Art Week must host an opening or major event during the week. The major museums open on Wednesday, and several private collections are opened to the public, including exhibitions at galleries such as CAMERA WORK in Berlin West, Galerie Friedmann-Hahn, and Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery located in Berlin-Tiergarten. These galleries are spread across parts of Berlin including West, Mitte, Tiergarten, and Wedding, affecting several neighborhoods of the city.

Stehle's top tip for navigating Berlin Art Week is to use the bullet tours that combine multiple stops into one guided route. The programming of Berlin Art Week also includes a raft of talks and film screenings, ensuring there's something for everyone. Whether you're a seasoned art enthusiast or just starting your artistic journey, Berlin Art Week is a must-visit event.
