Intense clashes claim lives of 19 individuals, with numerous others injured, in Israeli attacks on Gaza territory
In a statement made recently, the President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Mirjana Spoljaric, condemned Israel's plans for a mass evacuation of the City of Gaza. The city, home to approximately one million Palestinians, has been the epicentre of a military offensive initiated by Israel since October 7, 2023.
The offensive, in response to an attack by the radical Palestinian group Hamas, has resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths and 250 refugees. Thousands of residents have already fled the city, located in the northern part of the Palestinian enclave, with more leaving daily due to severe Israeli military offensives.
The evacuation, if carried out, would trigger a mass population movement that the Gaza Strip cannot absorb. The region is already struggling with widespread destruction of civilian infrastructure, food scarcity, water scarcity, shelter scarcity, and medical assistance scarcity.
The UN is involved in the situation in the City of Gaza, with data indicating that approximately one million Palestinians reside there. The UN has expressed concerns about the potential displacement of up to one million people from Gaza City.
The Israeli army has declared the City of Gaza a "dangerous combat zone," and bombings have occurred in various neighbourhoods, including Al Nasr, affecting a bakery and a shop, and Al Rimal, a location with many displaced people. A residential building was destroyed in Al Rimal.
The latest death toll from the offensive is nearing 63,400, with 124 of the deaths being children. Of the total deaths, 330 were due to starvation caused by Israeli restrictions on humanitarian aid.
In her statement, Spoljaric stated that it is impossible to withdraw the entire population in a "safe and dignified" manner. The ICRC, along with other humanitarian organisations, is working tirelessly to provide aid and support to those affected by the conflict.
As the situation in Gaza City continues to escalate, the international community is urging for a peaceful resolution to the conflict and a halt to the military offensives. The ICRC, the UN, and numerous other organisations are calling for the protection of civilians and the preservation of their dignity during this difficult time.
