In the heart of Gujarat, the picturesque town of Morbi was plunged into grief on Sunday evening, as a British-era bridge collapsed, leaving a trail of devastation in its wake. The incident, which occurred around 6:30 PM, has claimed at least 90 lives and left numerous individuals injured.

The bridge, reopened for public use just four days prior, was reportedly overcrowded at the time of the collapse. Mehul Raval, a survivor, estimated that there were nearly 300 people on the bridge when it suddenly gave way, causing everyone on it to fall.

The collapse has been compared to the Machchhu dam disaster of 1979, due to the high number of casualties. One resident, drawing parallels, stated that the incident brought back painful memories of the past.

The incident marked the first major event for Morbi since the dam breach incident of 1979. The bridge collapse occurred as the town was gearing up to celebrate Diwali, with many residents, including Vijay Goswami and his family, enjoying their vacation.

Mr. Goswami and his family had to cut their vacation short due to a disturbing incident. As they were crossing the bridge, they noticed some youths shaking it, prompting them to return midway. Unfortunately, the bridge collapsed shortly after they left.

Several children at the site reported their family members or parents missing after the bridge collapse. The rescue efforts, though immediate, were hindered due to reduced light at night, as stated by a resident.

A large number of residents of Morbi rushed to help those who fell into the river after the bridge collapse. Kanti Amrutiya, a former BJP MLA of Morbi, joined the local rescue teams. Mr. Amrutiya stated that he rescued several individuals but many others were already dead by the time they were pulled out.

The rescue efforts were not in vain, however, as a 10-year-old child survived by holding onto a hanging rope. Unfortunately, his parents are still missing.

The bridge collapse has left the community of Morbi in shock and mourning. The local authorities are investigating the incident to determine the exact cause. Preliminary reports suggest that the bridge collapsed primarily due to overcrowding.

Despite the tragedy, the spirit of unity and resilience in Morbi remains unbroken. The town is coming together to support each other in this difficult time.
