International coalition intensifies sanctions and diplomatic efforts against Russian President Putin, seeking to facilitate a peaceful resolution
In a series of significant developments, European leaders and the US have agreed to ramp up pressure on Russia and China. The discussions were initiated during a meeting of the Volunteer Coalition and a telephone conversation between Finnish Prime Minister Juha Sipilä, also known as Stubb, and US President Donald Trump.
During the Volunteer Coalition meeting, Stubb highlighted the productivity of both the meeting and the subsequent telephone conversation with Trump. A consensus was reached on three key issues: offering security guarantees to Ukraine, increasing pressure on the Russian Federation with more sanctions, and compelling Russian President Vladimir Putin to negotiate peace with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Trump.
Stubb also emphasised the necessity for Europe to suspend purchases of oil and gas from Russia, a move aimed at impeding Russia's military machine. However, it's important to note that Hungary and Slovakia, two European Union member states, continue to buy Russian oil.
In addition to Russia, Europe and the US also agreed on the need to increase pressure on China. Stubb's statements were made to the Finnish press, and he reiterated his belief that it's time to increase pressure to bring Putin to the negotiating table.
The deadline given by Trump to Putin regarding a potential peace agreement expired on Monday, but no new statements from either leader about a potential extension or new deadline were reported. Stubb agreed with Trump that it's crucial to stop Russia's war machine, and he stressed that stopping oil purchases from Russia is a necessary step in this direction.
It's worth noting that while the search results do not provide specific names of all participants in the telephone conference with President Trump discussing pressure on Russia and increased sanctions, it is known that US officials such as the US Special Envoy Kellogg and advisers like Witkoff and Rubio were involved in related diplomatic discussions and sanctions planning.
However, Russia has shown no signs of wanting peace, according to Stubb's statements. Despite this, the hope remains that increased pressure will lead to meaningful negotiations and a peaceful resolution to ongoing conflicts.
