International Cricket Council (ICC) Imposes Penalty on Sri Lanka for Excessive Bowling Breaks in First One Day International (ODI) Against Zimbabwe; Here's the Details
In the thrilling first One Day International (ODI) against Zimbabwe in Harare, Sri Lanka faced a fine from the International Cricket Council (ICC) due to a slow over-rate, but the team managed to secure a seven-run victory, thanks in large part to Dilshan Madushanka's impressive hat-trick in the final over.
The sanction was imposed in accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which pertains to minimum over-rate offenses. The fine amounted to five percent of Sri Lanka's match fees.
Captain Charith Asalanka pleaded guilty to the offence, and no formal hearing was required as he accepted the proposed sanction. On-field umpires Langton Rusere and Richard Kettleborough, third umpire Forster Mutizwa, and fourth umpire Percival Sizara levelled the charge. The ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, Jeff Crowe, imposed the sanction.
Despite the over-rate issue, the match will be remembered for Madushanka's stunning hat-trick. With Zimbabwe requiring 10 runs to win off the last six deliveries, Madushanka picked three wickets off the first three deliveries of the last over. This was his second ODI hat-trick for Sri Lanka, having previously claimed a hat-trick in 2018 against Bangladesh.
Madushanka's hat-trick helped Sri Lanka secure a much-needed victory, adding an exciting twist to the #ZIMvSL series. The link to the news article about the match is: https://t.co/g9G0zQkGRO
It is worth noting that Madushanka is only the third Sri Lanka bowler to pick multiple hat-tricks in ODI cricket, joining the ranks of Lasith Malinga and Chaminda Vaas.
As the series continues, fans will be eager to see if Sri Lanka can maintain their momentum and if Madushanka can continue his impressive form.
