International Juniors Hockey Event Remains Tainted: The World Juniors Controversy Erupts
In a shocking turn of events, five players from the 2018 Canadian World Junior hockey team, which won the tournament, are currently embroiled in a sexual assault scandal. The players summoned to London, Ontario, to face charges are Philadelphia Flyers goaltender Carter Hart, Calgary Flames forward Dillon Dubé, New Jersey Devils players Michael McLeod and Cal Foote, and Ottawa Senators prospect Alex Formenton.
The incident, which allegedly occurred in June 2018 at a gala, has raised questions about the morality and complicity of certain teams and the NHL in covering up the incident. On January 24th, 2023, these five players were summoned to face the charges. Alex Formenton was charged with sexual assault on January 28th, followed by Dubé, Hart, Foote, and McLeod on January 30th.
All five players have sworn their innocence, but the optics of their absences and the charges do not look good. The defendant, known as Jane Doe, filed charges against Hockey Canada and eight unnamed players from the team. It is important to note that there are no publicly available credible sources confirming that any players from the Canadian team that won the 2018 Ice Hockey World Championship were charged with sexual assault in 2023, nor is there information about unknown players related to such allegations.
Hockey Canada initially launched an investigation into the incident but quietly closed it in early 2019. However, due to backlash from political figures and sponsors, the investigation was reopened in July 2022.
