International organization calls for €120 million in assistance for earthquake survivors in Afghanistan
A devastating earthquake struck Afghanistan during the night of 31 August to 1 September, leaving thousands of people homeless and causing the deaths of over 2200 individuals. The UN, along with various international organisations, is appealing for emergency aid to help the victims of this disaster.
Indrika Ratwatte, the UN humanitarian coordinator for Afghanistan, has emphasised the importance of focusing on the affected population. He also warned that lives are at stake as winter temperatures approach the high-altitude communities in the region within two or three weeks.
In response to this crisis, Germany, through UNICEF and Islamic Relief, has provided 130 tons of supplies and medical, nutrition, and trauma care services. The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has also received support from the European Union's DG ECHO. However, the UN is seeking approximately 120 million euros in emergency aid to address the needs of the earthquake victims more comprehensively.
The UN's appeal comes as the UN urges donor countries to set aside their reservations about the ruling radical Islamic Taliban. Ratwatte, the UN humanitarian coordinator, attributes the decrease in aid funds to competing crises and the reluctance of many donors due to the Taliban's policies on women.
The UN is still facing challenges in including female aid personnel in their teams due to Taliban policies. The World Health Organization (WHO) has joined the call, urging the Taliban to lift restrictions imposed on Afghan female aid workers.
The UN humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan is ranked as one of the worst in the world. Ratwatte called on the international community to show solidarity with a population that has already suffered so much. Despite the challenges, the UN remains committed to providing aid to those in need.
However, the UN's appeal for emergency aid is facing significant challenges due to the policies of the Taliban. Aid funds for Afghanistan have decreased by 35 percent since last year, making it increasingly difficult for the UN to provide the necessary assistance.
Despite these obstacles, the UN continues to work tirelessly to provide aid to the people of Afghanistan. Ratwatte emphasised that the colder temperatures in the coming weeks will exacerbate the conditions for survivors in the remote mountain regions in eastern Afghanistan, making it crucial that aid efforts are stepped up. The UN urges the international community to come together to support the people of Afghanistan in their time of need.
