Tourism moguls aren't the only ones feeling the pinch as international vacationers steer clear of Nevada this summer. Executive Director of the Nevada Outdoor Business Coalition, Mandi Elliott, shared concerns last week about the impact this tourism slump could have on the state's economy.
Elliott revealed at a Clark County Wetlands Park event organized by Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV) that members of her organization are losing business from Canadian customers, just like resort executives on the Strip. The reason? Discomfort with the current U.S. administration's policies.
Las Vegas-based Base Camp Outdoors, a provider of camping, hiking, and outdoor equipment rentals, has seen cancellations from Canadian customers who nixed their trips to the U.S. due to the administration's policies, Elliott explained.
The current political climate consists of various factors that make Canadian travelers less inclined to visit the United States. These reasons range from economic disagreements to safety concerns and geopolitical issues.[1][3][4] The ongoing trade tariff war[2] and confusing visa processes[3] add fuel to this discomfort.
This unease contributes to a broader, general apprehension toward American travel, and it's hitting Nevada's tourism industry hard, including its outdoor recreation sector.[1]

The discomfort with the current U.S. administration's policies among Canadian travelers is not only affecting the Las Vegas Strip's casino-and-gambling businesses but also the outdoor recreation sector in Las Vegas, such as Base Camp Outdoors. This unease toward American travel is caused by a variety of factors, including economic disagreements, safety concerns, and geopolitical issues, and is significantly impacting Nevada's tourism industry.
